We Ordered 10 More Boeing 737-800s

Posted by arisoziar on Jun 22, 2011

We ordered 10 more Boeing 737-800s (also known in shorthand as the 738s) during the Paris Airshow, with an option to buy 10 more from our initial order in 2008.

How is this related to being green?  Because these new more fuel efficient Boeings are, as I write, replacing our stalwart 737-400s.  Brand spanking new Boeing Sky Interiors, new more frugal engines and new winglets that reduce drag.  A case of have your cake and eat it too.  Yummy…

Malaysia Airlines to Further Reduce Carbon Footprint with Pratt & Whitney’s EcoPower

Posted by arisoziar on Jun 22, 2011

We entered into a lease agreement with Pratt & Whitney to operate one of their Eco Power engine wash units.  This will reduce our fuel burn by up to 1.5%.  That’s a lot of CO2 savings tonnes of carbons.  It’s a closed loop system so all the waste water is collected and recycled.

The news was picked up by the Wall Street Journal here http://online.wsj.com/article/PR-CO-20110620-903499.html and our local news agency Bernama at http://www.bernama.com/bernama/v5/newsbusiness.php?id=595451

If you want to see a video of the Eco Wash in action, youtube it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvdK46bcqzc

Engineering & Maintenance Doing Their Part

Posted by arisoziar on Jun 20, 2011

Proudly Displayed For All To See

The banner at the entrance to our Engineering and Maintenance Division in Subang.  All the scrap metal, aluminium and other alloys, and other materials disposed in the course of maintaining our aircrafts, totally recycled.

Those metal detectors you see are so that an overenthusiatic staff member doesn’t sneak off with a piece of equipment or spare part in the name of recycling.  One way in, and the only way out as well.

Spot the Difference!

Posted by arisoziar on Jun 16, 2011

Our Engineering Stores at Subang are phasing out their Sodium vapour lamps for CFL ones (Compact Fluorescent Lights).  The CFL lights consume only 125 watts vs 250 watts for the existing Sodium Vapour lamps.  They also have a high ROI of only 1 year, meaning there really is an economic push for energy efficiency.  Plasma lights are even more efficient but are a lot more expensive.

Can you spot the difference?

this is a sodium vapour light

...and this is CFL... er hang on... or is it the other way round?

This time at our Business Support  Centre – strategically placed so that you will pass it as you enter the department.  And would you look at the landscaping – genius.  Oh dear… will have to beautify our bins.  Have to keep up with the Joneses!

And in case you’re wondering, our Business Support Department is the one that looks at all our online transactions and processes the fraudulent ones.  Because you know what?  Costs incurred by cardholders in fraudulent transactions will almost inevitably be borne by MAS.  So now you know why you have to enter a password on top of your credit card numbers.

5th Recycling Waste Collection at Admin Building KLIA!

Posted by arisoziar on May 25, 2011

Today 3.2 tonnes of waste was collected  for recycling at our KLIA complex.  2.7 tonnes from the Administration building and 463kg from the Engineering Material Management Department.  Engineering is a high security area and last time around, the Alam Flora truck couldn’t get in!  So this time, Rosila from Corporate Safety Oversight jumped into the truck to make sure they got in!

That’s Shila (as we call her) in blue below, seconds before she comandered the truck.  A tireless champion for the environment.

And guess what I found when I peeped into a bag that looked way to heavy to be paper by the way the workers were barely dragging it along…

Human Rights Training Session

The group outside Sime Darby convention centre

Sustainability includes Human Rights as well.  We attended a Human Rights training conducted by some senior people, including the Mark Hodge, Director of the Global Business Initiative on Human Rights, Gerald Pachould, the Special Advisor to the United Nations Special Representative on Business and Human Rights, and Bill Anderson, Adidas Group Head of Environment and Social Affairs Asia Pacific.

It’s easy enough to come up with a Human Rights Policy that would look good framed on the wall.  The real challenge is to figure out how to embed Human Rights (and Environment) into our core business processes.

And how do we get buy-in from senior management?  The business case is to understand that respect for Human Rights leads to the protection of the company’s reputation – if you protect rights, you protect reputation.  Turn senior management’s heads so that they see it from a risk perspective, and you’ve got your foot in the door.
